Behaviour Principles

This statement has been prepared in line with the Education and Inspections Act 2006, relevant DfE guidance (The School Behaviour Policy: the role of the governing body), and the Equality Act 2010.

Its purpose is to guide the headteacher in developing Shotley Bridge Primary School’s Beaviour Policy. This policy should reflect the shared values and aspirations of governors, staff, parents, and carers for all children at the school, while fully complying with legislation and guidance on behaviour. Staff should feel assured that they have the full support of the governing body when applying these principles.

This Statement sets out principles rather than practice. Responsibility for drafting the school’s Behaviour Policy rests with the headteacher, who must ensure they are consistent with these principles.

In doing so, the headteacher should also consider the DfE publication Behaviour and Discipline in Schools: A Guide for Headteachers and School Staff (January 2016).

The Behaviour Policy must be shared in writing with staff, parents/carers, and pupils each year and must also be published on the school website.

Our behaviour policy can be found here.

Our School Rules

Our Behaviour Principles

Our Behaviour Principles are rooted in our school values, our commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and our curriculum drivers.

  • Shotley Bridge Primary is an inclusive school where everyone is free from discrimination, harassment or victimisation of any kind. We ensure equity, which means ensuring each individual receives the support they need to achieve their potential.

  • Everyone has the right to feel safe at all times.

  • Bullying or harassment, in any form is not tolerated

  • Every pupil is entitled to an environment where they feel valued, respected and listened to.

  • Children should take responsibility for their actions and consider the impact on themselves and others.

  • Consequences should provide opportunities for reflection, learning and reparation wherever possible.

  • Children should be supported in developing self-discipline, empathy and resilience through strong self-regulation skills.

  • All adults in school must model, promote and uphold positive behaviour.

  • High expectations of behaviour and attitudes to learning lay the foundation for pupils to become confident, resilient and self-assured learners.

  • The school will work in partnership with parents and carers to promote positive behaviour and will seek advice from external agencies when appropriate.

  • Suspension will only ever be used as a last resort and will follow Local Authority guidance.

This written statement and the policies that are influenced by it apply to all pupils when in school, when engaged in extra-curricular activities such as educational trips and visits (residential and non-residential) and when travelling to and from school.

The governors wish to emphasise that violence, threatening behaviour or abuse by pupils or parents, towards the school staff, will not be tolerated.
