Early Years at Shotley Bridge Primary School
Early Years at Shotley Bridge consists of two Reception classes. We share one large classroom and outdoor area with two separate teaching spaces.
Our Early Years Curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure that children are exposed to a range of activities and experiences which enable them to meet our seven curriculum ambitions to become:
- Confident communicators
- Independent individuals
- Caring classmates
- Magnificent movers
- Marvellous mathematicians
- Brilliant bookworms
- Wonderful writers
- Enthusiastic enquirers
- Imaginative innovators
Our Early Years curriculum is also underpinned by the Shotley Bridge Primary School values: to be independent, courageous, kind, conscientious, inclusive, and, honest.
Our curriculum is built upon the use of high-quality texts and nursery rhymes. We place great importance on story time and singing songs together each day.
We seek to provide a rich environment in which every child makes excellent progress. In addition to our broad curriculum, we plan around the needs and interests of individual children.
We continually reflect on the different ways that children learn and implement this in our practice. The characteristics of effective learning are at the forefront of our minds when planning activities. The characteristics of effective learning are:
- Playing and exploring – children investigate, experience things and ‘have a go’
- Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and they enjoy celebrating their achievements
- Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing this.
Early Years Practitioners are ‘partners in learning’ supporting children as they engage in a balance of adult led and child led activities. Phonics, literacy and maths skills are taught through discrete daily teaching sessions as well as weaving through contextual play-based learning across the day.
Shotley Bridge Early Years gives children the best possible start and builds the foundations for future learning.
