Welcome to Year 3 Learning for 2016 to 2017
November 2016
In science we have been learning about the structure of the Earth. We enjoyed cutting, in half, a hard boiled egg and comparing its interior to the earth. The shell was like the crust, the egg white was like the mantle and the yolk was like the core!
Den building
Year 3 spent a morning in the woodland building dens for Stig from out class novel, Stig of the Dump. We worked in teams and later on in the week we will be writing instructions on how to build a perfect den.
October 31st 2016
Year 3 really enjoyed working with Adam Bushnell on Halloween! They wrote spooky stories about evil witches and wizards and created frightening potions or objects that belonged to their character.
Autumn 2016
Year 3 have been to visit Killhope Lead Mine linked to our science topic – rocks! The children learnt about what it was like for children working in the mine in Victorian times and were able to explore where the workers lived and see the wheel. The children were given hard hats and torches and were able to head deep into the mine and see what it was like down there. It was dark, wet and spooky but everyone was brave enough to go down! Everyone also had the opportunity to dig for galena (a shiny mineral) just like the washer boys at the mill and take some home as a souveneir. A great day our for everyone! A special thanks to all the parents who came and helped make it such a brilliant day.
This term in History Year 3 are learning about the Stone Age. They have enjoyed creating cave paintings. First they used chalk to draw pre-historic pictures on sugar paper and then they went outside on to the yard and drew on the ground and walls. The children had a fantastic time acting and communicating with each other like cavemen.
Our Learning
In November 2015 Year 3 went to Hamsterley Forest to explore and build dens. The children took part in Stone Age activities, led by the staff from the forest, they made clay pots and jewellery too. It was a fabulous opportunity to learn in the outdoors and great fun was had by all as you can see from the photographs.
