Learning 2017 to 2018
Chocolate Bar Inventions
This half term, we will be designing and making our own chocolate bars. This week we tested different types of chocolate and chocolate bar fillings. We then asked the rest of the class which chocolate and fillings they liked the best in order to decide which fillings we should use in our own chocolate bar inventions. We recorded our findings onto a tally chart. We loved tasting the delicious fillings and we can’t wait to design and make our own chocolate bars in the next couple of weeks.
‘Skittles’ Experiment
To practise our scientific skills we carried out an investigation to find out what happened to the different coloured skittles when they were placed in water. We had to link our predictions to our work on colour mixing and use our scientific knowledge to write about what we thought would happen. Then we wrote a method and results section. We were surprised to see that the colours did not mix straight away but made lovely rainbow patterns.
Consett Steelworks Collages
In our history lessons this term, we have been learning about Consett Steelworks. We have learnt lots of very interesting information about what Consett was like in the past. We worked in small groups to create a collage of the steelworks using a variety of materials. We needed to collaborate and share ideas as well as listen to the ideas of others. We presented our finished collages to the rest of the class.
To finish off our science topic on animals and humans, we explored life cycles of different animals. We used playdough to re-create the life cycle of animals including frogs, butterflies and turtles.
Last term Y2 were lucky enough to have a dance coach who worked very hard with them in their PE lessons. Each class helped to choreograph a dance to a song from Matilda and they practised and practised until they could remember all of the tricky moves. To celebrate all of their hard work they attended a dance festival at the Empire Theatre in Consett, they were joined by children from other local schools. It was a fantastic morning, the children were very brave getting up on the stage and they performed beautifully. It was an exciting experience being allowed backstage and a great way to showcase all of their hard work.
Thank you to the Leisureworks staff for making it all possible!
In our art lessons, we have been exploring colour in order to create a colourful background for our ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ inspired silhouettes. We learnt how to make colours by mixing different colours together and investigated what happened to colours when we added white.
Class 5 Pyjama Party
In the Autumn Term, Class 5 won the ‘Meerkat Manners trophy for being kind, helpful and lining up smartly in the line at playtimes. The children voted for a pyjama party with a film and popcorn. In the last week before February half term, the children brought in their pyjamas and a teddy and we all got changed after lunch time. We had a fabulous party and enjoyed watching ‘The BFG’, eating popcorn and drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows.
Spring Term 2018
On Safer-Internet Day we designed posters to explain the importance of being safe on-line. The children were helped to understand how quickly messages and photographs can be shared on-line and how important it is to only share messages and information with people that you know.
Zoolab came to visit school. It was exciting looking at the creatures closely and handling some of them. Have a look at our photographs.
In the autumn term Year 2 have had lots of fun exploring African art and design. We have had the opportunity to explore the natural resources available around school. We have all enjoyed making a African collar necklaces, headdress, mud huts and painting animal silhouettes.
Science
Year 2 have been learning about Animals and Humans. They found out about their basic needs, growing up, balanced diets and the importance of keeping clean. To find out about the effects of exercise on the body the children carried out a number of simple exercises and recorded how it made them feel. They also carried out a germ investigation to teach them the importance of keeping clean and washing our hands properly. The glitter on the children’s hands represented germs and they had to see how effectively a paper towel, cold water and warm soapy water were at getting them clean again.
In Y2 we have been learning about 3D shapes. To help us understand some new vocabulary and explore the properties of 3D shapes we made skeletons of cubes, cuboids and square based pyramids. The edges were made using sticks or cotton buds and the vertices were made with playdough or Blu-Tack. To look at the number and shape of the faces of these shapes we cut out, folded and stuck together nets to make a 3D shape.
