Summer 2019
The children visited Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth as part of their ‘Under the sea’ learning. The opportunity to see many sea creatures, as well as other animals, was fantastic. Touching starfish, fact finding and watching seals perform was amazing. The children also were able to have their lunch on the beach because of the super weather.
Spring 2019
On Tuesday the children were shocked to see the emergency services at school. Year 1 went straight out to investigate what had happened. They discovered that a UFO had crashed into the school field. The children worked with both the police and fire service to investigate the scene. They had the opportunity to look at the equipment the fire services had brought along and they all got to have a go at using the hose. All children also worked with the police to find out more about their job role and what they do at the scene of a crime. Children had the chance to try on uniforms and take their own finger prints. Children wrote lists of what they found at the scene of the crime and made a class mind map answering the 5 W’s.
On Wednesday the children went back out to discover green slime around the UFO leading down into leaf land. They discovered lots of adjectives to describe the alien who must have crashed their UFO. One child thought it would be a good idea to leave adjectives to describe the children at Shotley Bridge Primary School in case the alien was scared of us, so we made a list and put it out for the alien to find.
On Thursday the children discovered an intergalactic passport, which told them exactly who the UFO belonged to. They decided to make missing posters to describe the alien, to help find him and support the police investigation. They also went outside to measure parts of the UFO using cubes and used language to compare the lengths of different parts left behind.
Year One have been creating models of local landmarks.
Step One, collect re-cycled materials.
Step Two: Invite parents and carers in to help the creation of the models. Instructions were given and everyone got to work. There was co-operation, competition and collaboration as well as much speaking and listening involved. The children shared the skills learnt in previous art and design sessions with parents to create their 3D models. Thank you to everyone who contributed materials and also to those who came in and enjoyed the afternoon, we really appreciated your support.
